The best off-road drives and destinations in Australia

A map of Australia showing where we drove on a trip in 2016 on some of Australia's greatest desert tracks - Drives Destinations
In 2016, we spent nearly 10 weeks driving some of Australia’s greatest desert tracks

At the heart of this site are the best off-road drives and destinations in Australia. The great Aussie road trip some may say.

But we take it just that little bit further. And sometimes a lot further!

We’ve all heard this saying, “It’s all about the drive, not the destination!” Well, while that is partly true, if it wasn’t for the destination in the first place, then we probably wouldn’t have gone for a drive.

Our biggest drive so far was when we spent just under ten weeks on an epic journey through the desert regions of Australia while working for Hema Maps. That trip alone ended up clocking in at an impressive 18 118km. The majority of that adventure was definitely More Dirt Less Bitumen.

That’s not to say that there aren’t any good drives in Australia where you don’t leave the blacktop. Far from it. It’s just that our focus will be on off-road and remote drives and destinations. Dirt roads are just our favoured way to travel around Australia. You know, the ones where you’re still finding dust in the corners and crevices of your four-wheel-drive months later!

Living in Brisbane, we realise that we have to spend a bit of time on the bitumen before we hit the dirt. That doesn’t stop us from finding dirt tracks wherever possible in South East Queensland.

Australia is a big country, and a lot of the country is crisscrossed by dirt roads. So, pack your four-wheel drive, stock the fridge and join us as we make our way around Australia one dirt track at a time.

Below are just a few of the top drives and destinations in each state.
